State Tax Liability

If you have unpaid income taxes with your state, it is in your best interest to take care of this right away. If you cannot full pay your taxes, call your state department of revenue or taxation and ask for a payment plan.  Each state has different rules about what information they require and what time frames they will allow for payback.

Most importantly, DON’T IGNORE the notices you receive. If you the think the IRS is strict, the States are even more so.  Some states will levy all your take home pay and some will actually issue arrest warrants for unpaid taxes. The states can also revoke some types of licenses including medical licenses.

You can Google your state department of revenue or taxation and in some cases you can find out there what your options for payback are.   Another option is to contact an Enrolled Agent or other tax professional for advise and assistance if you need to file  state tax returns in addition to having  unpaid taxes. Just don’t ignore your notices. I have had client’s entire paycheck levied and I had a client who was arrested for non payment, so I know this is serious business.
